Associate of Applied Science Degree Medical Assistant Program

The objective of the Medical Assistant Program is to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to qualify for entry-level positions as Medical Assistants.  Since Medical Assistants are trained in both administrative and clinical procedures, they are capable of filling a variety of entry-level positions including clinical or administrative assistant, medical receptionist and medical insurance biller. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the National College Competency Test (NCCT) for Medical Assistant and earn the credentials of National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA).

Hours

The Medical Assistant Program is held both day and evening.  Day classes are held Monday through Thursday between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Evening classes are held Monday through Thursday between 5:30 pm and 10:30 pm. Classes missed due to holidays or other scheduled cancellations are made up on assigned Fridays or by extending regular class hours. Clinical assignments may not coincide with normal school hours or days. This in-depth training is a combination of classroom, interactive lab, and externship.

Nature of Work

Medical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the physicians’ offices and other specialized practices such cardiologist, pediatrics, podiatrists, chiropractors running smoothly.  The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, depending on the location and size of the practice and the practitioner’s specialty.  In small practices, medical assistants usually handle both administrative and clinical duties reporting directly to the health practitioner.  Those in larger practices tend to have more specialized duties reporting to an office manager or a department administrator.

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is expected to grow by 18% from 2020 to 2030.  This growth is a result of expansion in the health services industry due to technological advances in medicine, and a growing and aging population.  In view of the preference of many healthcare employers for trained personnel, job prospects should be best for medical assistants with formal training or experience, and particularly for those with certification.
